LAWTON, OK (RNN Texoma) -With the colder nights we experience over the winter months, more people seek assistance from shelters.
C. Carter Crane Shelter for the Homeless is helping people in the community get back on their feet. With the winter weather here, Director of the shelter, Edith McKinley said they have prepared extra space, and bedding for people that may come in. She said there is usually an increase this time of the year because some people don’t want shelter, but just somewhere temporary to go.
“They just need somewhere warm to go to get out of the weather for a few hours, and we also can provide that along with hot meals, we’re willing to help however we can. We have extra blankets, coats, clothing if they need clothing," said McKinley.
C. Carter Crane Shelter for the Homeless provides services that include shelter, re-housing, employment, resume building, interview and job skills. McKinley said maintaining a place like this for people to come is important year round.
“It’s important because every person is a human being and human beings are at their best when their basic needs are met, and that’s what we try to help with," said McKinley.
She said they always need donations and if they receive an abundance they do share with other organizations.
“In this time of year, the heavier clothes are always, always in demand, and as far as our shelter operations go, the donations of paper goods and things like that are always fantastic, and they help a lot," said McKinley.
They accept single adults and families. McKinley says they cannot take in anyone unaccompanied under the age of 18.
