LAWTON, OK (RNN Texoma) - The Fellowship of Christian Athletes presented an award to one of its students of the month Thursday.
The student is Christan Maldonado, a football player and wrestler for MacArthur High School. His football coach says Christian never missed a practice or game despite injuries, and says he encourages his teammates.
The southwest Oklahoma representative explained how they pick the students for each month. “One of the things I want to do is bring a positive light to the things that student athletes do here, not just the things they do on the field, but the things that you don’t see a lot of the time. So this award, we’re recognizing not only their accomplishments athletically but also what they do in the classroom and outside the classroom," said Richy Large of the FCA.
To be named the student athlete of the month for FCA, students need to be nominated by their coaches.
FCA also named the impact coach of the month today. That award went to Daniel Wall, head women’s basketball coach for Eisenhower High School. He was awarded in front of his team today, and he says he’s honored. “Definitely caught off guard, completely humbled and honored. I don’t do anything like this for accolades or honors or anything like that, i do this because the lord opens doors and I love my lord and savior. And the chance to work with kids and a great coaching staff and administration day in and day out... it’s just a blessing to be a part of it," said Coach Wall.
This is the third time that FCA has named a coach and athlete of the month.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes has also named its female athlete of the month in Lawton.
Sydney Gunter is a senior at MacArthur High School and as you can see, she's also a member of the Lady Highlander basketball team.
Gunter received the award for her leadership on and off the court, but she says it was a team effort. “It makes me feel good that people actually nominate me and think of me for things like that,” said Gunter.
"Is there anything else you would like to say?"
“I love you girls,” Gunter said to her team.
“Love you too, Syd,” replied her teammates.
For her efforts, Gunter received gift cards to Academy Sports and Outdoors and Texas Roadhouse.
