ELGIN, OK (RNN Texoma) - Runners sported their ugliest Christmas sweaters Saturday afternoon for Elgin’s 2nd Annual Ugly Sweater 5K fun run.
The event was an un-timed race in which participants could run, jog or walk the route in their ugliest Christmas sweaters. All proceeds from the 5K are donated to Elgin Winter Wishes, a program that provides gifts for Elgin Middle School students.
“Well, it’s a great cause. All the money goes back into our school system," said Kori Eslick. "It’s just a great cause. If you don’t know about Winter Wishes, look it up. But, the chamber tries to sponsor for the community and have fun things for families to do. So, participation is great.”
One runner said he participated in Saturday’s 5k because of what it stands for.
“The main reason I’m supporting Elgin’s Ugly Sweater 5k because what they’re doing for kids in the community, you know, within their environment," said Trevel Crawford. "They’re trying to do it for free. They’re trying to bring kids happiness. They’re doing things like having a group of people wearing purple shirts for a colorblind kid, just because it’s an act of kindness. And, to me, that’s what makes people better.”
There were three prizes given away. One for first finishing man, one for first finishing woman, and one for the ugliest Christmas sweater. The prizes were donated by Elgin businesses.
