Lawton City Council names new city manager

LAWTON, OK (TNN) - The Lawton City Council has appointed Michael Cleghorn of Harker Heights, Texas, as Lawton city manager. Cleghorn will start the job on February 11.

Michael Cleghorn was announced as the new city manager at Tuesday’s council meeting after the city council met in executive session.

Councilman Caleb Davis said Cleghorn comes from a large public works department where he served as director. Davis said Cleghorn’s worked in city government for the past 14 years and worked in federal government for 21 years before that.

He hasn’t been a city manager before, but Davis and the other council members showed through their unanimous vote they have faith in him. Davis said one thing that impressed him about Cleghorn was his grasp of how things work.

“He has a lot of knowledge about public roads, sidewalks, streets, infrastructure and that’s exactly what we’re trying to address in this town. It was really encouraging to have a candidate that had such a firm grasp of those things,” Davis said.

Following the announcement, Cleghorn released a statement about being named Lawton’s next city manager.

“As a seasoned municipal government employee, I can provide strategic hands-on direction to help (the Lawton) community meet its top priority goals and objectives,” Cleghorn said. “I am confident I can make a positive impact as your new city manager.”

Cleghorn will be replacing Jerry Ihler after he retires on January 11. Assistant City Manager Bart Hadley has been named interim city manager.
