LAWTON, OK (TNN) - A local radio station has pulled R. Kelly from their broadcasts amid the resurgence of the artist’s sexual assault allegations.
The new attention on Kelly’s history comes in the wake of the Lifetime docu-series “Surviving R. Kelly.” The six-episode series detailed the years of abuse allegations involving women and underage girls.
But the controversy was too much for Perry Broadcasting, who pulled R. Kelly from 2 of their stations at the urging of their air personalities. “We thought it was best now, since surviving R. Kelly came out. It’s been a big issue all over the United States and people are pulling his music from the air and I feel like it was time for us to do it too, because as long as we keep playing his music, it’s letting some of the victims feel like we condone what he’s doing,” said Jay Neal of 97.9 JAMZ.
Many activists are now calling for criminal charges to be filed against Kelly.
Authorities in two states are now seeking witnesses and evidence in connection to the singer.
