Local agencies offer assistance during government shutdown

LAWTON, OK (TNN) - It has now been over three weeks since the partial government shutdown... and federal employees are beginning to believe there may be no end in sight.

One local agency in Duncan is offering up extra help for people who are furloughed. Christians Concerned has been helping residents in need for nearly 50 years with Emergency situations like this shutdown. The organization has always helped provide food to those in need they’re now providing some financial help.

“People that are on Furlough know they can at least come get a little bit of help. They are gonna have a much bigger mortgage and car payment than our typical clients, but at least we can help them a little bit.” said Penney Gardner

In Anadarko, the local government is in charge of nearly all utilities, and if you can present your federal ID card, the city will work with you on a payment arrangements while paychecks remain unseen. Anadarko has a few hundred government

“We want to make sure our neighbors and friends who are part of our community, they serve us everyday, and it’s unfortunate that congress and the President cant pass a budget that allows them to be able to work and take care of their families”

“We’re going to do the best we can but at some point there is going to be a breaking point even for those of us that are trying to help because we’re having to pick up an obligation that is the responsibility of the federal government and particularly our elected officials and we can’t do it for long periods of time.” said Kenneth Corn

Both Christians Concerned and Anadarko’s local government realize that this isn’t the local employees' fault, and helping them deal with this time without pay is crucial for their livelihoods. employees and right now all of them are wondering when they can get their lives back on track.
