Lawton Public Schools' top spellers compete in Scripps Spelling Bee

LAWTON, OK (TNN) - The top spellers at Lawton Public Schools competed in the regional Scripps Spelling Bee at Central Middle School Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel Thankachan took home first place, with David McCoy earning runner-up. Both students are 8th graders at Tomlinson Middle School.

300 words were on the list for 41 students from Lawton elementary and middle schools to spell.

The event is a highlight of the year, allowing students to show off the work they’ve put in to become the best spellers.

“All of the work they have to put in to doing this. It’s good for their study habits, learning these words and definitions help with their school work," said Teresa Jackson, Director of Curriculum & Assessment at Lawton Public Schools.

Thankachan & McCoy earned a trophy and will move on to the State Scripps Spelling Bee in Oklahoma City on March 2nd.

If they win at state, they will move on to nationals in Maryland at the end of May.
