LAWTON, OK (TNN) - The Lawton Police Department and the Lawton Fire Department now have more funding for their community events, thanks to the community itself!

Large turnout for Lawton Heroes 5k Color Run

Saturday was the Lawton Heroes 5k Color Run, a fundraiser dedicated to giving back to those who give so much.

At the event, hosted by Inspire Lawton and the Oklahoma National Guard, people were able to enjoy bouncy houses, free food, and of course, the color run 5K!

“We wanted to put together a free community event to bring people together to support our local heroes: Our Lawton Police Department and our Lawton Fire Department. They have events that they hold for us, as a community that they don’t have a budget for," said Trevel Crawford, Inspire Lawton. "So, we want to create that budget, but we also want to bring people together to do it, and bring awareness to the guys that protect us and the guys that put out fires. They’re putting their lives on the line for us.”

The public information officer for the Lawton Police Department says to see the community give back to both departments means so much.

“Well, it means a lot to us," said Sgt. Timothy Jenkins, Lawton Police Department. "We do a lot of community events... Cops and Kids picnic and Cops and Kids Poker Run to where we give back to the community. So, to have an organization willing to come and do something for the Lawton Police Department, as well as the Lawton Fire Department, to come out and give back to us, it means a lot.”

Crawford says Inspire Lawton plans to do this type of event every few months to give back to Lawton's emergency responders.
