LAWTON, OK (TNN) - Shrove Tuesday, is a celebratory day for those who follow the church calendar. It is a day where people can binge on all their favorite foods until tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, which is also the beginning of lent.
“In theory, a lot of people give something up for lent," said James Lynn, member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. "Whether it’d be swearing, candy, Diet Coke, smoking, whatever. Not everybody does it, but the idea is to give something up for lent, and make it a little bit difficult on yourself.”
But members also want people to consider taking something up for lent.
“We would encourage people to take up a more active, deeper prayer life, to take up a compassion for fellow human beings, be their friends," said Glen Boyer, member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. "So yes, give up something, but take up something as well.”
But until lent starts tomorrow, Boyer said the best way to spend Shrove Tuesday is with good company.
“I’ve met a lot of new people. I’ve met many people that I know that are celebrating here with us," said Boyer. "So, this is really the ultimate way of celebrating the last day before lent is to do it with your fellow men and fellow women.”
