LAWTON, OK (TNN) - A group of Lawton teens is kicking off Spring Break with a character-building event at Central Middle School.
The “Say No To Gangs” lock-in event started at 6:30 Friday evening and will run through Saturday morning.
The students are in the school’s gym, spending time together while participating in team-building activities and learning test-taking strategies. The boys are also hearing from their coaches on how to avoid the dangers of gangs.
It’s a lesson the coaches say is vital, as they’ve seen more than one student lose their lives to gang violence in recent years
“We see that as an epidemic. If we lose one or two young men, that’s a problem. We’re trying to do the best we can to get these young men to understand their own value and the value that they add to this community, and try to push them in the right direction so they understand that they can make a difference in their lives," De’andre Swanson, head basketball coach at CMS.
The coaches and students will be in the gym through the night until 9 in the morning Saturday.
