MedWatch: CCMH Chaplains design bereavement education program-3/20/2019

LAWTON, OK (TNN) -The death of a loved one is never easy, and for some, the grieving process takes a lot longer. Now, Comanche County Memorial Hospital has a new program to help you in your healing journey.

Death is inevitable, and we’ve all dealt with it in some way or another. However, not everyone grieves the same way. The chaplains at CCMH have designed a 10 week bereavement education program to help you along the way.

“We put this together because I find that so many people who are grieving, or going through bereavement, and it seems like un chartered territory,” said Chaplain Ted Edwards.

“There’s aspects of grief that will always be hard to understand,” said Chaplain Paul Gore. “But I find that people just need some guidance so they can find their footing. in this period in their life.”

This 10 week course will follow the book, “Understanding your grief”, by Alan Wolfelt.

“So you’re going to come and you’re going to learn about your grief,” said Chaplain Gore. “And also have the opportunity to share about your grief. You don’t have to share, but it’s helpful for each participants to hear from one another.”

Chaplain Ted Edwards is the hospice chaplain. He says there is no set amount of time it takes to grieve.

" We know a little bit of what to expect," said Chaplain Edwards. “But we’re not really sure what is going to happen in my individual journey of grief, because it is just that. An individual journey of grief. No 2 people grieve alike, even in your own family.”

Hospital chaplain Paul Gore says what makes this group different than others, is that it’s ran by 2 chaplains who have experience working with families who’ve experienced loss.

“It could be loss of suicide,” said Chaplain Gore. “Loss from a tragic accident unexpected, as well as death at the end of a long disease process like we often see in hospice.”

The Mourning and Meaning 10-week grief education and support group spring session will start April 1st, and happen every Monday at 4pm in the Lawson Chaplaincy Center at CCMH. You can register by calling 580-355-8699, ext. 3172.
