2019 Youth Art Expo highlights Lawton talent

LAWTON, OK (TNN) - The greatness and creativity of Lawton’s youth was on display Saturday afternoon at the 2019 Youth Art Expo.

The first expo put on by the group, The Great 580, saw a large turnout of both artists and community supporters.

The artists ranged in age from sixth grade to twelfth grade. There were two divisions, middle school and high school, and prizes were also given out. Different types of art was showcased, including photography, paintings, and mixed media artwork.

The president of The Great 580 said the event’s purpose was to show the artistic talent in Lawton’s youth.

“The Great 580 team kind of came up with this idea of let’s expose the young artists in this community and kind of debunk the negative moniker of “shady 580,″ show them that not all these kids are out here doing negative things," said Jeff Elbert, president of The Great 580 Association. "We wanted to kind of show the dopeness and the greatness of these young people.”

Elbert said after Saturday’s great turnout, several people at the expo have already recommended that the event happen twice a year. He said he definitely wants the expo to become an annual staple for The Great 580.
