LAWTON, OK (TNN) - Graffiti once covered the walls of the Wolf Creek drainage structure off of NW 74th Street. So, the City of Lawton and the Young Professionals of Lawton decided to clean it up, by giving it a fresh coat of paint.
“Young professionals of Lawton is founded around three pillars of mentorship, fellowship, and charitable giving," said Tiffany Vrska, "This is one of the many service projects that we do throughout the year to give back to our community.”
The organization also received help from community volunteers.
“We’re just happy that we already have some new members or prospective members and community volunteers that have come out, some new faces out here," said Vrska. "So, it’s really nice to see the giving spirit of Lawton and knowing that there’s so many people here who are passionate about giving back to the community.”
One neighborhood resident was especially thankful for the volunteers cleaning up.
“My house was vandalized. We’ve been calling the city about the graffiti for a couple of years, and recently, my house was vandalized behind my air conditioning unit," said Domonique Jefferson. "So, we’re just thrilled that they’re coming and cleaning the graffiti up.”
Jefferson's two teenagers also decided to help out with the service project. She hopes the cleanup will inspire them to give back to the community throughout their lives.
“I’m absolutely hoping it will instill that in them and I’m just grateful that other children are out here doing it," said Jefferson. "So we take ownership of where we live and we’re proud of our city.”
