Lawton Police Department holds graduation ceremony for Citizen’s Police Academy

LAWTON, OK (TNN) - It was graduation day for the members of the Lawton Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy.

Thursday’s ceremony comes after 12 weeks of classes and training.

Students participated in all kinds of hands-on training sessions, like driving and shooting simulators.

The graduates all received a special t-shirt, a certificate for completing the course and a CD with pictures from this year's academy.

LPD has been running the academy for over ten years, and they say they love being able to connect with and teach the community.

“Our program has a big impact. I remember when I was on patrol, talking to people who attended this and seeing people in the neighborhood, they put into play what they learned at this academy. And so when they go out, go back to their neighborhoods, go o their neighborhood watches, jobs, they spread the word, they use those tactics that we gave them, because they know a little bit more than the average person,” said Sgt. Timothy Jenkins.

The police department holds the academy every year, starting on the first Thursday in January.

Anyone wanting to participate next year can find more information on LPD’s website or go to the department’s front desk.
