Oklahoma shoppers enjoy sales tax break

Associated Press - August 7, 2009 12:25 PM ET

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Shoppers across Oklahoma are enjoying a break on sales tax this weekend on certain purchases of clothing and shoes.

The annual sales tax "holiday" began just after midnight Friday and continues through midnight Sunday. It exempts state sales tax, as well as city, county and local municipality sales taxes, on most purchases of clothing and shoes less than $100 per item.

The exemption weekend was passed, in part, to help border retailers compete against stores in Texas that offer a similar exemption on Aug. 21-23.

Missouri also has a sales tax "holiday" this weekend, but that state's exemption also applies to school supplies up to $50 and personal computers up to $3,500. There are no exemptions in neighboring states Kansas, Arkansas and Colorado.
