Police investigate overnight shooting in Altus

ALTUS, Okla. - An overnight meeting in an Altus Wal-Mart parking lot turns violent and ends with at least one man being shot, police say.

Altus Police say a man from Texas arranged to meet several people from Lawton in the parking lot.  Police still do not know why they met and believe the location was chosen randomly, but at some point, one of the men shot another one.  It happened around 1:30 a.m.  The victim tried to run away but collapsed in the parking lot.

Police say after the shooting, the men tried to drive off in the victim's car, but they were able to arrest one of the men, Coy Lee Alexander.  They say he is the shooter.  An Altus Police Officer just happened to be near this parking lot when he heard shots.  He went in the direction of them just in time to see the suspects drive off.

"As he pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot the car exited at a high rate of speed and people pointed to the car as he chased the car," said Altus Police Chief Mike Patterson.

The chase lasted only a few blocks north to a nearby hotel.

"They bailed out of the car and they chased them on foot we found one of them hiding in the Best Western," said Patterson.

Police immediately cordoned off the surrounding area, but no luck.  The other three or four men were gone.

"We interviewed a number of witnesses," said Patterson.

And because of their information, they found two guns in a ditch.  They think Alexander and one of the other men shot at the victim and hit him in the leg at least once.

"One shot could have done double damage we're not sure," said Patterson.  "Two rounds also hit the door to Wal-Mart and broke the door."

Patterson says it is fortunate no innocent citizens were hurt. He also says that when groups meet in public to their settle business, it is odd.

"Normally when you want to meet in a public place there's not a lot of trust."

Police say the victim underwent surgery Tuesday morning at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.  His injuries do not appear to be life threatening and he is cooperating with police.

One other bit of evidence police say they are looking at is Wal-Mart's cameras to see if the actual shooting was captured on tape.

Police say they are still looking for the other three or four people involved in the shooting.  If you have any information, contact Altus Crimestoppers at (580) 482-TIPS.
