OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The
Oklahoma House has adopted a resolution declaring "Oklahoma - In God We
Trust!" as the state's official motto.
The resolution was adopted Monday on a voice vote and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
Democratic Rep. Danny
Morgan of Prague says he introduced the measure after learning Oklahoma
never officially adopted a state motto. The words "Labor Omnia Vincit,"
or "Labor Conquers All Things," appears on the state seal, but Morgan
says it was never officially authorized as the state motto. He says he
hopes to keep "Labor Omnia Vincit" as the state slogan.
The head of the Oklahoma
chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, former Democratic state
Rep. Ryan Kiesel referred to the resolution as a "frivolous waste of
legislative time."
