Velma road named after murder victim

Posted: Updated:

Velma, OKLa._

A Velma road will be renamed in honor of a Braylee Henry, the 16-year-old girl who was brutally murdered in June.

Velma council members and Mayor approved to rename a Velma road after they were approached with a petition with over 600 signatures from residents who wanted to do something in Braylee's honor following her death.

School Road, which runs North on the west side of the Velma-Alma School grounds, was approved to be renamed Braylee's Way.

Residents along the road approved the name change even though it meant they would need to change their addresses.

The next step will be working with the Stephens County Commissioners, who will need to update E911 mapping to make sure emergency officials will be dispatched to the correct address.
