UPDATE: Officer Suffered Two Gunshot Wounds in Wednesday's Shooting

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_ The officer injured in Wednesday's shooting, Officer Eric Weatherly, suffered two gunshot wounds: one to the lower torso and one to the leg.

One of the suspects, 22-year-old Demetrius Miller, was wounded during the altercation, as well. LPD said he's still in the hospital right now. They did not release his condition. According to OSBI, Miller has been arrested for the shooting that wounded Officer Eric Weatherly. LPD said Miller has never been booked into their jail, so they do not have his mugshot at this time.

Around 9:20pm Wednesday, Lawton police confirmed the second suspect, identified as Jamal Erwin Johnson, 22,  had been arrested.

We understand the officer is fine and expected to recover fully. We still have gotten no word on the condition of the other man.

It started around 11:00 AM in a neighborhood off Cache Road near northwest 26th.  Lawton Police Chief James Smith said officers were called about two suspicious black men in the area.  He said as officer Eric Weatherly approached the suspects near 27th and Atlanta, one of the suspects opened fire. Weatherly shot back. It got so heated, a second officer, Craig Lyman, arrived and started shooting through his windshield. Both Officer Weatherly and one of the suspects were shot. The second suspect took off running and is still on the loose.

A homeowner said she saw the men in her backyard, then heard a knock on the door but didn't open it.  Another person saw the men knock, and then take off running down 27th Street. When officers caught up with the suspects near 27th and Atlanta, the shooting started. Now, the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case.

As Lawton police and the OSBI meticulously comb through the crime scene, both have to figure out how and why it happened.

"I don't know what they were doing there, but it's one of the tactics that burglars use," Chief Smith said. "They'll knock on the front door, and if nobody answers, they'll come around the back door and break in."

"As far as who shot whom, that's going to be things we're looking into," OSBI Agent Richard Goss said. "A lot of that is going to be based on witness interviews, the officers, and the subjects themselves. There are some forensic techniques we can use."

Agent Goss said, right now, it's still unclear which suspect fired the shot that injured the police officer.

"Times have changed," Goss said."I've been in this business quite a while now, and it was a rare occasion for somebody to engage a police officer in actual gunfire. I think Chief Smith will agree. Now-a-days, it seems like its more and more. It's a very serious matter; we take it very seriously."

Annie Brintz works in the building right in front of where the shooting occurred. She said she heard the gunshots.

"My adrenaline was running, and it still is," Brintz said. "I went next door to find out if anyone knew what had happened. I was a little scared. I didn't know if someone was running around with a gun or what."

Police say they did find a gun at the scene. They did not say who it belonged to.
