Burrage says funds lacking for audits

Oklahoma City_The man tapped by the governor to be the watchdog over spending from the federal stimulus package says his agency's financial problems are being complicated by uncompensated auditing requirements.

Auditor and Inspector Steve Burrage says no federal funds have been designated for Oklahoma at this point to pay for what he called "real time'' audits of money going to some state agencies and local governments.

He says it will create a shortfall and he is considering seeking a supplemental appropriation from the legislature. He says his agency already is in a financial squeeze because of a decline in the percentage of state money appropriated for regular audits.

He says 16 states were picked to get federal funding for the stimulus audits, but Oklahoma was not one of them.
