Health officials warn of syphilis

Oklahoma City_State health officials are warning teenagers about the danger of syphilis after seeing an increase in the number of young people with the sexually transmitted disease in central Oklahoma.

The bacterial disease can lead to major health problems if untreated. I'is usually found in older age groups.  Officials say 10 teenagers have been diagnosed with syphilis in central Oklahoma during the past four weeks compared to 15 teens with the disease all of last year.

Jan Fox at the state health department says some of the cases appear to be from parties where young people are having unprotected group sex.

She says the details of the parties are coming from some of the teens who have the disease.

Free testing and treatment is available at local county health departments.
