Medicine Park fire danger eases

Medicine Park_No new evacuations Friday night because of the wildfire near Medicine Park. At last report, officials said the fire was relatively stationary in the area of State Highways 58 and 49, but they are still actively fighting the fire. Because of that, Lake Lawtonka will be closed to all boating and recreation activity Saturday.

Officials have also still not given the go-ahead for those who evacuated their homes in Medicine Park to return home.  Around 500 homes were evacuated Thursday night when the fire spread from Fort Sill's West Range toward the Big Rock area of Medicine Park.

At least thirteen homes have been destroyed by the fire. Several outbuildings and other structures have been damaged. Officials say the business district of Medicine Park was not impacted by the fire. It has burned close to 5,000 acres, with about 1,500 of that in the Medicine Park area.

The last official report released around 6pm Friday said the fire is only 40 percent contained.  That estimate remained relatively unchanged most of the day Friday, so while there's no official confirmation, it's clear the fire is not spreading as rapidly as it was Thursday night.

A minor foot injury sustained by a firefighter is the only one reported.
