Public firework displays allowed in a few SW Okla. counties

SOUTHWEST OKLAHOMA - With all Southwest Oklahoma counties under strict burn bans, the skies over Texoma this 4th of July will look a bit darker.

Near record droughts have forced counties to cancel such celebrations altogether -- like in Tillman County.

"If you look at the national weather service, you see Tillman County is basically the epicenter of extreme drought conditions. We've been lucky so far that we haven't had that many wildfires and we want to keep it that way. We do not want to have a situation like Medicine Park last week occur in our county," said Tillman County Sheriff Bobby Whittington.

But some counties have put together alternative plans so you still can celebrate the 4th of July with some fireworks.

The counties with no fireworks at all: Comanche, Kiowa, Tillman.

These counties will only hold public displays, but no private fireworks allowed.

Caddo: In Anadarko, still needs to set a date, time and place -- call the city for more details

Cotton: In Sultan Park, just north of Walters July 4 from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Grady: In Chickasha, Shannon Springs Park July 4 -- call the city for more details

Greer: In Mangum, Mounties Arena July 4 at dusk -- Stars and Stripes Forever celebration from  6-8 p.m. in city park

Jackson: In Altus, still needs to set a date, time and place -- call the city for more details

Jefferson: In Waurika, Waurika Lake June 3, 9 p.m. -- Recommended to get there early

Stephens: In Comanche, Field of Dreams July 2 -- music at 8, fireworks show at 9

In Duncan, still needs to set a date, time and place -- call the city for more details

In Loco, intersection of East Street and 1st Street on July 2

In some of these places, if winds pick up, the public displays will be canceled.
