Colby HamlinSTERLING, OKla._ A Lawton man accused of crashing a pickup and killing a Sterling man over the weekend could face a judge as soon as Monday.
Right now, Colby Hamlin is behind bars at the Comanche County Detention Center on multiple complaints, including DUI, leaving the scene of a fatality accident and escaping arrest.
Investigators say he was passed out behind the wheel of a pickup that was still in gear, when his foot slipped off the brake and the truck crashed into 76-year-old James Bragg. He was sitting on the bench in front of Eddie's Short Stop in Sterling.
After Hamlin was taken into custody, he reportedly slipped his handcuffs in front of him and took off in an officer's patrol car. Police shot out the tires and re-arrested him.
"Based on the situation and what we're gathering at this point in time, they were obviously aware we had a dead human being here and this man is trying to escape is still intoxicated. It's certainly up to the district attorney to determine if the use of deadly force was justified at that point in time," said OSBI agent Richard Goss.
Sterling residents say the victim, James Bragg, was well known in the community. They say his trips to Edie's were a morning routine.
