LAWTON, Okla. – The unexpectedly cool weather is translating into great ticket sales at the Lawton Rangers Rodeo.
Tonight's second night is selling great guns. But rodeo fans seem to be a hardy bunch. 7News found out even last night's scorcher did not keep the fans away. In fact, the Rangers say it was one of the best opening nights ever.
So far, this year's weather has not affected ticket sales. But with today being cooler than usual, 7News wanted to find out if more fans would come out tonight.
The heat is not the only thing that was high last night at the 73rd Annual Lawton Rangers Rodeo; so were ticket sales.
"Usually, Wednesday night is our slowest night, but last night we had a real, real good crowd," said Lawton Rangers President, Larry New.
And New expects tonight will be even better. This cool weather could be good news not only for the fans, but for the performers as well.
"Not only that, but we will have more people and also the stock. The horses, bulls, everything else, they feel so much better. And they will perform a lot better also," said steer wrestler, Cole Camac.
Many wranglers say this break in the weather is exactly what they need.
"The heat's pretty hot on the horse, just like it would be for any other human athlete. But it really affects the way they perform and the way the cattle perform as well," said Camac.
Surprisingly, this year's attendance spiked from the past three years and New thinks he knows why.
"Everybody pretty well thinks that people are tired of staying at home, staying in the air conditioner. They wanted to get out and they came out," said New.
In case you would like to be there tonight, it is Two-For-One Night. That means if you purchase a ticket for admission, you can get one guest in with you for free!
The rodeo is at the L.O. Ranch Arena just down the road from 7News. It runs through Saturday night.
