COPY-Okla. lawmaker wants House to consider meth bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An Oklahoma lawmaker is calling on the state House to hear legislation he filed to require a doctor's prescription for a common cold medication that contains the key ingredient for making methamphetamine.

The measure by Rep. Ben Sherrer of Pryor Creek would make pseudoephedrine tablets a Schedule III drug requiring a doctor's prescription. The bill passed the House Public Safety Committee 13-4 earlier this year but was never scheduled before the full House.

Sherrer says that so far this year, 327 illegal meth labs have been found in the city of Tulsa alone. In 2010 there were more than 818 meth labs in the state of Oklahoma.

Requiring prescriptions for pseudoephedrine tablets received broad support from law enforcement agencies during a legislative study about the methamphetamine issue earlier this week.
