Getting to know Carlos Mencia

Posted: Updated:

Comedian Carlos Mencia has been performing for about 25 years. Mencia arrived Wednesday night in Amarillo, his next stop in his comedy tour. He talked about everything from tips to success to charities he's contributed to and of course his tour.

Mencia says, "I was going to be an electrical engineer. I was a straight A student. My friends really thought I was funny, and they said you should try doing standup. And I did it."

When asked what advice he would give for kids who want to be comedians, "For anybody, knowing your limitations and understanding them. And knowing what you're good at. And following that to its extreme to be the best you can."

When asked what charities he's contributed to, Mencia said he's never said no to helping. And he shared an experience he had with a child from Make-A-Wish Foundation. Mencia says, "It was a very settling and humbling experience when somebody who is going to die has a wish, and that wish is to see you perform."

With about 25 years of doing comedy, he took some time off and changed his style of telling stories. Mencia says, "I traveled a little bit to get a feel for what's going on out there, and I ended up with stories of humanity that I felt were real. And not just celebrity driven. We'll probably end up doing about 400 shows and end up in over 200 cities."

If you'd like to go to Mencia's comedy show in Amarillo, he will be performing this Saturday night at 8 at the Globe News Performing Arts Center located at 500 South Buchanan Street.
