Domestic issue leads to stabbing

Posted:

LAWTON, Okla. – The early-morning stabbing in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn in the 2600 block of NW Cache Rd. was the result of a domestic violence issue, Lawton Police say.  It happened around 8:30 this morning.

Police say the suspect, Alan Chestnut, saw his estranged wife in the parking lot of the hotel with her ex-husband.  They say chestnut became angry and began fighting with both his wife and the victim, first verbally, then physically.

Police say the reason the Chestnut's wife and ex-husband was because they share custody of a child, but chaos, nonetheless, ensued.

7News found out that Chestnut's wife was with in the parking lot with her ex-husband because of a scheduled visit with their child.  We also found out that Chestnut, a Fort Sill soldier, was already on shaky ground with his wife.

Lawton Police say they see lots of domestic cases, but they usually do not end like this.  The parking lot is quiet now, but early this morning it was anything but.  Police say when Chestnut saw his wife and her ex-husband having a scheduled visit with their child in the hotel parking lot, he became enraged.

"He confronted him, a domestic between our suspect and his wife started.  Our victim was there and he was confronted also by the suspect.  A physical altercation ensued and at some point during that physical altercation, our victim was stabbed in the back," said Lawton Police Capt. Craig Akard.

Akard says when police arrived at the scene Chestnut was out of sight, but not far away.

"They were looking around the area and they saw the individual matching the description in the creek and went down there after him," said Akard.

Akard says Chestnut and his wife were already having troubles.  And there is legal documentation to prove it.

"The wife does have a protective order against the husband at this time, or, at the time that the incident happened.  I don't know exactly what the grounds for that protective order was, but she did have one outstanding against him."

Akard says he has seen a lot of domestic cases, but this one is not what he would call "ordinary".

"Occasionally these types of things come up.  Usually it doesn't go as far as a stabbing.  Usually it ends up being some type of domestic argument.  It usually doesn't go this far, but it has happened in the past."

Akard says Chestnut was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and violation of a protective order.  7News also spoke with the Fort Sill Public Affairs Office.  They say anytime a soldier is arrested off-post, it is in the domain of the appropriate authorities.

7News was told after his civilian legal troubles are dealt with, Chestnut could face separate charges by the uniformed code of military justice.  Akard says, luckily, the victim's injury was not a life-threatening one.  He says he was taken to the hospital and treated.
