Reality show auditions coming to Lawton

Posted:

LAWTON, Okla. – Talent, charisma, and a knack for writing a hit tune could land you a spot on an upcoming reality show.  It is called "The Songwriters" and producers will hold auditions in 60 cities in 8 states, and Lawton is one of them.

Each audition will feature 15 finalists who will perform their songs, and the judges will choose one to advance to the next round.  Then 10 finalists from that group will advance to the Texas Song Fest Music Festival in Commerce, Texas to determine the champion.

Jerry Hall, who owns Jerry's Music Emporium in Lawton, is helping to organize the event.  The producers of the show, BMG Management based in Nashville, contacted Help to help get the word out.

His message is simple: If you have a passion for music, this is the competition to enter.  It is not your typical reality TV show.  No partying, just business.

"Winners will eventually get offered contracts, recording contracts on this deal and so it's a pretty big deal.  We're excited about it," said Hall.

Contenders can write any genre of music, rap, country, gospel, hard rock, etc.  And that id something Hall believes will uncover undiscovered talent.

"There's a lot of song writers in the area.  So I think it will be a good contest," said Hall.

Finding the next big writer is the ultimate goal of the show, and Hall says it is a very big deal in the music industry.

"Everybody wants to make it big and have a big song.  So I would think the hopes would be to make a record deal, maybe get your song out there and be discovered," said Hall.

That is what Lawton resident Keith Curts hopes.

"I have a lot of songs I've written and this is just a chance for me to get out there and get a little bit of exposure," said Curts.

Curts has been writing music for nearly 15 years and says if he makes the finals, it could make his career.

"This would just give me a good chance to do something a little more with the stuff I've worked on and spent a bunch of time on, other than just have it sitting at home on the computer," said Curts.

And you do not have to be the typical rock star to enter.  They are looking for real people.

"This is a little more real, just local people, anybody.  You don't have to be pretty, you don't have to be.  It's about your song writing, that's how this will differ," said Hall.

Anyone interested in entering the competition has until Feb. 19 at 6:00 p.m. to submit a song.  Just take your submission to Jerry's Music Emporium.  The contest will be held Feb. 27 the Great Plains Coliseum.

The contest's winner will receive a BMG Management contract offer, and a professionally-mastered recording of their song.  The producers plan to put the program on the air by the end of the year.  They are still working out a deal to determine which channel will air it.
