Gun sales increasing as election nears

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Gun sales are increasing as the political climate remains unsteady.

The presidential election is eight months away and things are already heating up.

Some say possible political changes have more gun enthusiasts stocking up out of fear.

Locally, Panhandle Gunslingers has seen a nearly thirty percent increase in gun and ammunition sales and expect that to continue to climb until November's elections.

Dr. Dave Rausch, a political science professor at WTAMU says this years election will probably be similar to 2008 when it comes to gun sales, but says there are things voters and gun enthusiasts need to realize.

"I think the issue people are concerned about is the same one as the 2008 election, the last presidential election, that with a democratic president is he going to come in and change all of the gun laws and make it harder to own a firearm and since the tradition in the United States is Grandfather law, you know you get grand fathered in and if you already own a firearm, the law can't say they will take it away from you," said Dr. Rausch.

Rausch adds it may be difficult for President Obama or any other politician to get gun legislation passed because of the split in Congress.
