Firecracker Tournament set to tee-off Friday

The Fourth of the July is right around the corner. That means the return of one of the area's most popular events, the annual Firecracker Tournament at the Lawton Country Club.

"We have such a long-standing tradition with it being almost 50 years old," said Lawton Country Club Pro Jeff Mayhall. "It's just something that people come back and kind of plan for every year and make it. It's almost like a reunion type deal. Between this and the city championship, they're like the two main events for golf in Lawton. It's just something that everyone looks forward to every year."

This year's field is expected to be loaded with talent. A number of past champions and contenders are signed up to compete. But this year, the length of the tournament has increased.

"This year we've added an extra day," said Mayhall. "We only had two last year, played 36 holes. This year will be a 54 hole event for the championship flighters which will bring in a little more competitiveness. You can't shoot yourself out of it the first day. You still have a couple of days to shoot yourself back in to it, in to the field and in to the hunt."
