Changes could be coming for next July 4th

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_Comanche County Commissioners are looking ahead to July 4th, 2013. They want to spare the county a repeat of the more than 100 fires caused by fireworks last week.

Western District Commissioner Don Hawthorne said he wants to start a dialogue between the county and volunteer fire departments to create designated areas in the county where people can go to pop fireworks.

"It's an opportunity for some of the small towns to set up a city park or whatever for economic reasons. People can come to their town and buy hamburgers or gas or whatever. Maybe even charge to come in and shoot fireworks."

Hawthorne says he would like to have an agreement set by July 4th of next year.

We'll keep you updated.
