Stephens County Sheriff asking for more deputies

Posted: Updated:

STEPHENS COUNTY, Okla_Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney is asking County Commissioners for more deputies. He said they cannot adequately cover the entire county with the current staff of only 10 deputies on patrol.

"A lot of times these calls are very high priority calls, fights with guns involved, disturbances, domestic disturbances, one of the most dangerous calls you can go on and some of my guys are having to respond to that by themselves. In a county of over 800 square miles the times to get to these locations sometime is lengthy."

McKinney is asking for three additional deputies, for a total of 13.

By comparison, Canadian County, Oklahoma which has almost the same number of square miles as Stephens County has 18 patrol deputies.
