A break-in leads to an early morning shooting

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_Police say a man was shot around 3:30 Wednesday morning after he broke into his ex-wife's house in the 1800 block of C Avenue. When they arrived, the intruder had been shot in the chest and the shooter voluntarily gave himself up.

Police say they got a 911 call Wednesday morning about a man who was beating on the front door of a house, trying to get in. Before officers got there, he had forced his way in, and got into a confrontation with another man inside. That's when he was shot. One neighbor who knows the people involved said she still can't believe what happened.

Barbara Center woke up early to the sound of gunshots.

"I sat up in bed and was bewildered because we hear it quite a bit in this area but usually back behind us. My little dog normally doesn't bark and he was just going haywire towards the bedroom window."

She could see the glare of the flashing police lights from her window. Center said out of concern for her neighbors, she went to check things out.

When she walked outside the street was filled with police cars and that put her even more on edge. She was not prepared when she learned the shooting involved people she knew.

"Next thing I know the cops had brought the gentlemen outside and I heard one of them say the gun is on the ground. I thought ‘oh my gosh, what has happened.' Then I realized that it was my neighbor."

She said she had known the parties involved for a while. She remembered how happy they seemed when they were married and is shocked how things turned out, first divorce and now this.

"How could something get this far? Why can't people just stop and talk? Why such a beautiful young couple?"

The ex-wife was at home during the shooting but she was not injured. She was very frightened last night and is still in shock today. The shooting victim had surgery Wednesday morning and is recovering in ICU. Police said he could face charges of first-degree burglary or assault. There has been no decision yet on whether the shooter will face charges.

Police are also investigating another shooting that happened late last night around 21st and Northwest Hoover. The victim told police he was walking down the sidewalk, when a man jumped out of the bushes and shot him in the leg. They said the victim said he does not know who shot him, but they are interviewing people about the case.

Police say so far, no one has been arrested. The victim sustained a serious injury and underwent surgery early Wednesday morning.
