Xcel Energy scam reported in our area

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - There is a new scam being reported in our area that claims to be from Xcel Energy.

We're told the scammers call you on the phone telling you that you need to pay a bill or your electricity will be shut off. They urge you to make the payment over a Green Dot pre-paid Visa card over the telephone.

Xcel says this scam is typically targeting Hispanic customers and is perpetrated by callers who may speak Spanish.

Any time customers are unsure if they've been contacted about their accounts or payments by Xcel Energy, call them at 1-800-895-4999 to verify that Xcel sent the email or letter or made the phone call.
