Conserve water in Amarillo

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Residents in Amarillo are now being asked to cut back on their water usage.

This comes after record high usage was reported within the city.

92-million gallons of water were used in one day this week in Amarillo, causing concern as the hot, dry weather conditions continue.

Amarillo city officials enacted stage one of the drought contingency plan Wednesday night, asking for voluntary water restrictions.

Canyon and Dumas have both started stage two of their plans, meaning their water restrictions are mandatory.

Amarillo Director of Utilities, Emmett Autrey is hopeful Amarillo will not have to switch to anything mandatory.

He says the rain many parts of the area received earlier this summer helped the water situation and the demand for water usually starts decreasing around this time of year.

"When we look at past years when we get past a siege like we've just seen, we typically this late in the year won't see the same intensity of usage for the rest of the summertime," said Autrey.

Through the voluntary watering schedules, odd numbered addresses can water Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and even numbered addresses can water Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

If consumption decreases for five consecutive days, the city says the first stage of the contingency plan will automatically end.
