Xcel Energy plans expansion to Quay County power plant

Posted: Updated:

Tucumcari, NM - Residents of Quay County will see some major upgrades to their power plant as early as next spring.

Xcel Energy plans to move a specialized combustion turbine from an existing facility near Borger to the new Quay County Generating Station in Tucumcari.

The new station will serve primarily as a backup power plant for the city. With the addition of the new turbine, the station will be able to meet the energy needs for the entire city of Tucumcari in the event of a failure in the main transmission line from Clovis.

The plans also include an expansion of the Campbell Street Substation and modifications to the grid to accommodate the new generator.

Xcel Energy says the new turbine will be installed after the 2012 peak summer season and will be operational by late spring of 2013.
