DUNCAN, Okla_It's not
uncommon for people to post their political views online, on their cars or
around their neighborhood. But a Stephens County man objects to a red, white
and blue, hand- painted sign, which reads *Vote for the American.* It stands
about half a mile from his house and he said it's become a bit of a problem for
drivers passing by.
The man did not
want to give his name but said it's not just the political position
on the sign that he objects to, it's the physical position of the sign.
Even though
there are no candidates' names on the sign, the message is clearly aimed at the
presidential election and one man who sees it regularly on his way home just a
half mile away isn't too keen on it.
"I don't
know that if the reason it was put up there is a bigotry issue or he's saying
that Obama is not an American because he was born in Hawaii I don't know if it's a black and
white issue. I'm not a bigot and wasn't raised that way and I don't care for
the sign."
But he also
said his primary complaint isn't political. He said it's a safety hazard
because of where it's posted. He said just a few days after the sign went up, he
witnessed a two car collision. A driver had run a stop sign, which is just
below the sight line someone would use to read the small billboard.
"The young
man could have been reading the sign and did not see the stop sign. The state
trooper said that the boy ran the stop sign."
He said if he
can't persuade the owner to take it down completely, he hopes he'll lower it so
it won't steer a driver's vision away from the stop sign.
"I think
the two levels is just too distracting."
7News did get
in contact with the owner of the sign. He declined to comment on the posted
message or reducing its height.
We also did reach out to officials in Stephens County regarding the sign
issue but have not received any word back.
