LAWTON, Okla_A bomb found
under a pickup in the parking lot of a northwest Lawton apartment complex forced dozens of
evacuations on Monday. Police are still trying to figure out who put it there.
They were
called to the 2400 block of Northwest Williams after someone spotted the
device. When police arrived, they called in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad
who confirmed it was an explosive. Residents in nearby complexes and homes were
evacuated until the team was able to safely detonate it several hours later.
No one was hurt
during the incident.
Using a rope
the bomb was dragged to a nearby basketball court where it was destroyed using
a water cannon. Police aren't sure if the owner of the pickup was targeted or
if it was placed there randomly.
It was a small
homemade type bomb that was responsible for causing quite a stir near the
apartments. Police officers and bomb technicians slowly reeled the bomb into the
field near a basketball court where it was detonated.
It's that sound
that residents and visitors like David Nelson are grateful took place away from
the apartments where something horrible, even deadly, could have happened.
"My
daughter, we used to live here, my daughter played all the time in the little
playground over there, kids play football all the time, people are always
out."
No one is sure
if anyone was targeted or if it was someone's idea of a prank that went too
far.
"Maybe
he's not right in the head, I don't think making bomb threats is a prank,,
making a prank is ringing someone's doorbell or something."
Either way he
said it's something that never should have happened.
"It's kind
of crazy to be honest, why would someone want to bomb someone's car, did they
consider anyone else that could be hurt, how big was the bomb, was it a threat
to a single individual or everyone that stays in these complexes?"
Again police
are investigating who is behind the bomb and are hoping to review nearby
surveillance video. Tenants have been allowed to return to their apartments.
