Lawton- Thousands of students, teachers and staff headed back to school on Friday in Lawton.
The first day of class was expected to chaotic and hectic as parents and kids get back into the school routine. Lawton police were gearing up for a busy day as well. It's their job to make sure students, teachers and parents get to school safely. The traffic division planned to split up so they could patrol school zones across the city to enforce and 20-mile per hour speed limit. For those who are dropping off kids, police say be sure to use the school's unloading area.
"It's best that way because then you won't have a backlog in traffic. You've got a lot of parents doing the same thing. Try to make it as quick as possible. If they do have parking areas try to utilize the parking areas. Do not block the streets because then it just becomes more of a bottleneck, more of a problem," said LPD Lt. Jim Cowley.
While busses will take some kids to school, a lot will get there the old fashioned way... on foot.
"They're going to be wanting to get there, wanting to get there fast to see their friends and they may not be paying attention to the cars going up and down the street. So we both have to pay attention the pedestrians and the drivers of the vehicles."
You should also beware of school crossing guards. They're going to be on the major roads, like east Gore Boulevard and Southeast 45th to help students navigate through traffic. Be sure to look for their stop signs and obey them.
