UPDATE: Stephens County to vote on rise in sales tax

Posted: Updated:

STEPHENS COUNTY, Okla_Stephens County voters have the chance to bail out their struggling fire departments.

On Monday, commissioners approved putting the .15 percent sales tax increase proposal on the ballot. The money raised would benefit 12 county fire departments as well as the City of Duncan's fire department.

Commissioners said the grassfires Oklahoma has been plagued with have taken a huge toll, not only on volunteer fire departments but also the City of Duncan's fire department.

Commissioners plan to place a seven year cap on the tax if approved. At the seven year point it will be decided if the tax should remain in place, decreased, or eliminated.
