Okla Health Dept. program looks to increase breast feeding

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma State Department of Health says 24 hospitals are participating in a pilot program and have agreed to stop sending free formula samples home with mothers.

The department says the "Ban the Bag" pilot program aims to increase breast-feeding rates in Oklahoma. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report finds that 71% of Oklahoma mothers tried breast-feeding - below the national average of 77%.

Jackson County Memorial Hospital has already banned the free samples and Comanche County Memorial will be "bag free" by the end of August.

Other hospitals that already ban free samples include: OU Medical Center, Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City and St. Anthony Shawnee.

Norman Regional Health System and St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, among others will also be "bag-free" by the end of August.
