Lawton, OKLa._A Lawton woman, who did not want to be identified, said she is still reeling from a terrifying encounter after being beaten and robbed this weekend. Lawton police said the victim was walking home late Friday night near 12th street and Southwest Park Avenue. They said a man walked up behind her, hit her over the head and knocked her to the ground. Then, he stole her cell phone and seventy dollars.
The victim said she has been walking the same route every day for almost a year. But Friday night was different, she said she was looking at her cell phone when she felt a sharp blow to her head.
"When it first happened. I mean, I was kind of in a daze, you know. He'd hit me pretty hard and when I finally came to what was going on he was already taken off", said the victim.
She said she was stunned when she hit the ground. Dazed and scared, she said it took her about a minute to compose herself before she could even think about getting away. She said once the reality of the situation sunk in, she immediately started doing a quick sprint to safety.
The victim said she wanted to get home as soon as possible but said she was not sure if her attacker was watching.
"I don't know if he was around the corner or if someone else was around the corner. It just automatically made me scared", said the victim.
She said once she made it to safety, she realized how lucky she was to have gotten away alive. She said the robbery has forever changed her sense of security.
"I feel lucky but at the same point, I feel like, he just took all my freedom kind of, because I am afraid to do anything by myself. So, I am lucky at certain things but he has taken away certain things", said the victim.
The victim said she feels crime has risen in her neighborhood, which is a few blocks from where the robbery occurred. She said she would like to see the area cleaned up. Lawton police said that while there have been some incidents of crime in the area, it is not considered a high-crime area. They said this robbery is under investigation.
