Mayor wins re-election after death

Jackson's Gap, Alabama - A dead woman has defeated her opponent in a landslide in a mayoral race for the town of Jackson's Gap, Alabama.

Some residents point to incumbent Janice Canham's hard campaigning or sentimentality as reasons for her keeping the position after her death.

Others point to her opponent's pending lawsuit against the city as the main factor behind the win.

The town council will have to appoint a new mayor after the new term starts in November.

Alabama state law requires a candidate's name to remain on the ballot, even after death and since Canham was still alive when she applied to be on the ballot, her name was allowed to remain.

The point of the law is actually to prevent candidates from killing rivals in order to win.
