Fire comes close to 7News studios

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_A fire broke out in our own backyard here at the 7News station Thursday. It happened around 2:30. Crews worked to contain the blaze. Their quick action proved to be very helpful considering the wind and heat.

The fire came right up to the asphalt parking lot just feet away from where all of us were at work.

While most of us left work, two of our employees got to work because they're volunteer firefighters. Skywarn7 Meteorologist Matt Dipirro had his firefighting gear in his car.

"I just threw my gear on here in the parking lot and started scanning the scene to figure out exactly what was going on."

Internet Content Director Jarred Burk left to get a fire truck and when he came back, grabbed hose and went to work as well.

Another employee manned a garden hose, soaking the ground by some propane tanks near our building. The fire began with a loud pop around 2 this afternoon.

A Fidelity Cable employee said he heard it while he was working, first the pop, then a power surge, then the fire.

Flower Mound Volunteer Firefighters were here in minutes and thankfully, kept the fire from doing more damage.
