LAWTON, Okla_How would you like to pay $1.59 for a gallon of gas? You can at Lawton's brand new compressed natural gas fueling station on Highway 59 the first of its kind in Southwest Oklahoma.
It's eco-friendly and a lot cheaper than the price of gasoline or diesel these days.
The station right off I-44 at the Medicine Park exit is the first in this part of the state. With gas prices going up all over the country some are turning to alternative fuels like compressed natural gas.
"There's some questions in people's mind but we want to be there for them if they want to convert their vehicles to CNG or buy a car that already has CNG capability so we want to be there for folks," Love's VP of Communications Jenny Love said.
People are taking notice. In 2010, around 500,000 gallons of natural gas was sold in the Sooner State. By the end of 2012 nearly 3 million gallons are expected to be sold. Scott Minton with Chesapeake Energy said Oklahoma has more natural gas fueling stations per capita that any other state. And he says price isn't the only benefit.
"It's cleaner, it's cheaper and it's American we drill natural gas from right underneath Americans' feet everyday. We don't have to worry about importing oil from overseas and we don't have to worry about hurricanes affecting our offshore production. It's all produced domestically right here in the United States by Americans"
Minton also says the price will be stable over the next 5 or 10 years. Lawton Mayor Fred Fitch attended the grand opening ceremony along with Oklahoma Senator Randy Bass. Fitch called it the fuel of the future. Now you can't use natural gas in regular vehicles. You have to either buy a car that is already compatible or you can purchase a special conversion kit and those can only be used on certain types of engines.
We're told you can get the same miles per gallon from natural gas as you can with gasoline. If you do use it, you may be eligible for rebates of up to $2,500 under a new program that went into effect earlier this summer.
