Living with Alzheimer's disease

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Every 68 seconds in the U.S. a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

A husband, a father, and a grandfather, Don Essary was diagnosed with Alzheimer's five years ago.

His family says they wish they could prepare others for the long journey.

Fay Essary is Don's wife and says it's important for people to understand the financial toll it can take on families.

Essary says many people are not able to get proper treatment and care because their families could not afford to have them in a proper establishment.

She says it can tear a family apart, but not hers.

"I truly believe there's a reason that he has the disease. I will never know, here on earth, why. But I think it's because people need to know more about Alzheimer's. It can happen to anyone and at any time."

She says one of the biggest challenges after hearing the diagnosis is finding someone to help.

Community support can go a long way.

Being involved in Alzheimer's research and support programs, and also different activities helps us become one day closer to finding a cure.
