Mosquitos could increase after rain, increasing the risk of West Nile

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - After rain in the area the population of mosquitos could greatly increase, which could result in even more West Nile cases.

Much of the Panhandle received moisture recently, meaning there may be standing water.

That standing water will give more mosquitos a chance to breed, increasing the risk of West Nile.

"Mosquitos they can go from an egg to an adult anywhere between four to fourteen days. I would say within about seven to ten days is when we will probably might start seeing an increase in the mosquito population," said Dr. Ed Bynum with Texas A & M AgriLife Extension's office.

The Amarillo Department of Environmental Health is spraying standing water to help eliminate some mosquitos, but mosquitos aren't just going to spread for large bodies of water, they can also move from your backyard.

"In our backyards and in, around our homes we have containers that will fill up with water and each one of those is a location where mosquitos can start breeding and building up the populations. So with the rains we have the opportunity to have more mosquitos around," added Bynum.

Bynum says dumping out any standing water can help the problem.

"If you are not able to dump the water, then we have some things that can be used that you can put in standing water. One of the things is called mosquito dump and it is a chemical that kills the larvae," said Bynum.

Along with taking care of any standing water, it is recommended residents continue to use repellent because mosquitos are likely to be around until late October.
