New LPD Chief to take over Monday

Posted: Updated:

Lawton- The man tapped to be Lawton's new police chief is set to take command Monday morning.

The city hired James T. Smith last month following a nationwide search. He was a Major with the Louisville, Kentucky police department in charge of more than 3,000 employees. Smith began his law enforcement career with the Kentucky State Police in 1982. He also served 30 years in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired with the rank of colonel.

The Lawton police chief job has been vacant since march when former police chief Ronnie Smith resigned. He says he was forced to leave the department.
