LPS gets federal grant for new Ft. Sill school

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_The Lawton Public Schools learned Monday they will get $37 million from the federal government to replace the two elementary schools on Fort Sill.

Geronimo Road and Sheridan Road schools will be torn down and replaced with a single school, to be named 'Freedom Elementary.' The aging schools were among the top 12 schools on the Pentagon's Public School Improvement Priority List. Superintendent Barry Beauchamp said LPS will still own and operate the school.

"This is not a Department of Defense school, these buildings will belong to LPS. The money has been given to the LPS. We are being charged with the responsibility of constructing the buildings and then maintaining those buildings adequately to serve the students at Ft. Sill."

The new school will have a four-building complex: one building for early childhood, one for primary education, one for intermediate education, and an activities facility which will house the gym, cafeteria and library. A groundbreaking date has not been set.
